To get into any of the top 10 IIT colleges in India is the dream of every aspiring Indian engineer because, as we all know, the engineering education in India is considered as top notch in the world. The following is the latest list of the top 10 IIT colleges according to the National Institutional Ranking Framework which is a methodology adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, to rank all institutions of higher education in India. This ranking helps IIT aspirants to know which the best IIT in India is and which IIT is best worth pursuing.

This ranking is according to the year 2016 and the list of 2017 ranking will be updated in the month of April. Based on reputation, faculty, and media citations all the IITs are given a score out of 100 and the ones to reach the top 10 for the year 2016 are the following:

Indian Institute Of Technology, Madras

NIRF score – 89.41

IIT Madras, founded in 1959, is presently the top IIT in India. With 360 faculty members, this IIT also offers undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees across 16 disciplines in Engineering, Sciences, Humanities and Management.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Bombay

NIRF score – 87.66

According to the latest records, 75{6713ba23e05232a925818888182dfaeb6662fdf7c105b8bc21967aa35cf30fda} of the top 100 ranks in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) are from this IIT Bombay. The most popular courses are Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Engineering Physics.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Kharagpur

NIRF score – 83.91

In 1951, this public engineering institution was set up by the government of India. As it is one of the top IIT institutes, it has the highest enrolment rate in India. New and innovative technologies are employed to improve and enhance the skills of the faculty.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Delhi

NIRF score – 82.02

In the list of Quacquarelli Symonds’ (QS), IIT Delhi has been listed in top 200 universities globally. At the time of establishment in 1961, it was named as the “College of Engineering and Technology” and it was only in 1963, that it became recognized as an ‘IIT’.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Kanpur

NIRF score – 81.07

Located near Kalyanpur village in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, IIT Kanpur was established in 1959. An IIT aspirant needs to secure a top rank in the JEE Advanced Examination to get admission into this college which offers the best courses in the field of engineering.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Roorkee

NIRF score – 78.68

Set up in 1847 by Lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason, IIT Roorkee focuses on the traditional values it was set up in. It was only in 2001 that it was awarded the status of an IIT. Ten of its alumni have won Padma awards.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Hyderabad

NIRF score – 77.22

Set up in 2008 by the Ministry of HRD, IIT Hyderabad has around 142 full-time faculty members and the best infrastructure facilities. In order to apply for undergraduate programs, you have to score a good rank in IIT-JEE.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Gandhinagar

NIRF score – 75.20

Indian Institute Of Technology, Ropar-Rupnagar

NIRF score – 74.88

IIT Ropar is one of the eight new IITs set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. At present, the institute offers Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech.) programme in various disciplines spread over a period of eight semesters to forty students in each branch, selected through IIT Joint Entrance Examination conducted every year.

Indian Institute Of Technology, Patna

NIRF score – 74.68

As of April 2016, IIT Patna has 670 students enrolled in its B Tech programs, 161 M. Tech students, and 259 Ph.D. students. Since its inception in 2008 and till April 2016, more than 400 students have been awarded B. Tech. Degree, more than 75 students have been awarded M. Tech. Degree and more than 20 research scholars have been awarded a Ph.D. degree.
