Although Rolex experimented with a rolex yacht master prototype in the late 1960s, the first official Yacht-Master didn’t emerge until 1992. The Yacht-Master ref. 16628 was the very first reference.

The rolex yacht master, being a complete 18k yellow gold edition, was positioned as a luxurious sports watch rather than a full-fledged tool watch like the Submariner. A 40mm yellow Oyster case and a matching gold Oyster bracelet are included with the Yacht-Master ref. 16628.

A bi-directional rotating bezel with a sandblasted backdrop and polished raised numbers sits above the case, which is also entirely made of yellow gold. The bezel of the Yacht-Master was a wholly new style when it was introduced, and it is now one of the most popular.

Rolex Yacht Master Second

While Rolex continues to manufacture the Yacht-Master 40 watch, the full yellow gold version is no longer available. The Yacht-Master 40 ref. 116621, which Rolex debuted at Baselworld 2016, is the newest addition to the line-up.

The Yacht-Master is a two-tone watch that combines Everose (Rolex’s unique rose gold alloy) with stainless steel. Rolex is introducing steel and rose gold Yacht-Master for the first time.

The steel Oyster casing is 40mm in diameter and has a Triplock winding crown. It is also waterproof to 100 meters. An Everose rotating bezel, with its trademark sandblasted backdrop and high-polish raised numerals, is mounted on top of the case.

The rose gold surrounds enclosing the luminous hour-markers and rose gold. Mercedes-style hands continue the Everose gold embellishments on the sunburst chocolate brown dial. The date window and the Cyclops perched on the sapphire crystal above it are still present.

Despite the 24-year gap between the current rolex yacht master ref. 116621 and the original Yacht-Master ref. 16628, both watches are powered by the Caliber 3135 automatic movement. It’s worth noting, however, that Rolex now promises an enhanced accuracy rating of -/+ 2 seconds each day across all of their actions as of 2015.
